Basement Flood Protection

Heavy storms can expose a weak point in basement drainage. Spivak Plumbing installs backwater valves, sump pumps and battery backup sump pumps in Toronto and York Region. The first step is understanding how water reaches your basement. A sewer backup and water collecting around the foundation are different problems.

Work covered

  • Backwater valve installation
  • Sump pump installation
  • Battery backup sump pumps

Choose equipment for the actual problem

A backwater valve can help reduce the risk of sewage returning through the connected drain. A sump pump moves water from its basin to a suitable discharge point. The existing connections matter. Installing one device does not solve every cause of basement water entry. Tell us where water appeared during previous storms and whether you already have a pump or valve.

Keep the installation serviceable

A valve needs an accessible cover. A pump needs space for checks and maintenance. If you are finishing a basement, account for that access before flooring and walls are completed. A battery backup can support a sump installation when the main pump loses power or cannot run as intended. Its suitability depends on the basin, equipment and expected conditions. Batteries and pumps still need attention over time.

Toronto’s subsidy program

The City of Toronto Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program includes eligible backwater valve and sump pump work. Check the City’s current rules before arranging the installation. Application documents, eligible equipment and inspection requirements matter. Approval and any payment are the City’s decision. We do not promise a rebate amount. The official program link below is the place to check current details.

Planning around your basement

Send photos of accessible equipment and explain any renovation plans. If you live in Vaughan, Newmarket or King City, do not assume Toronto’s program applies to your address. Municipal requirements can differ. We can discuss the plumbing work and the access needed at your property. Keep records of the selected equipment and completed work for maintenance and any applicable application. Have any available product instructions or previous service records ready for the discussion. They can help identify what has changed and what still needs to be checked at the property.
